Microorganisms (also known as microbes) are the smallest life beings that can only be seen through a microscope. They are the most numerous beings on Earth, they settle all the enviroment - soil, water and air, participate in a vital way in every ecosystem and interact with plants, animals and man. Microorganisms are essential for the functioning of biological systems and mantaining of life on the planet, since they participate in biotechnological, metabolical and ecological processes. They are divided in two categories: prokaryotic and eukaryotic; archaea and bacteria belong to the first one, while fungi, algae and protozoa belong to the second one. Viruses, viroids and prions are also considered microorganisms as well.
