Which number would you add to one and nine-tenths to give an approximate sum of 6? three and one-third five and two-elevenths four and one-twelfth two and seven-eighths

Because you are going for an approximate number, you are just trying to get close. You currently have 1 and 9/10. That is almost 2 (like really really close to 2). So you need to add about 4 to get 6. The closet number you have to 4 in your list of choices is 1 and 1/12. That is just a bit over 4. Adding these two numbers together you end up with 5 and 59/60. You can't get much closer to 6 than that.
