OpenStudy (asnaseer):

How do you invite people to OS in the new UI. I recall in the older UI there was some place from where I could enter the email address of the person to invite - I can't find this any more.

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

i think they mentioned something about using fb/twitter then when people joins via that link they count as people you invited...i dunno dont recall much

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

So what happens if the people I want to invite don't have a facebook or twitter account?

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

that's the prob :/ wish they can invite via friendster hehe

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

I myself do not have a facebook or twitter account - so I guess that means I can no longer invite people to this site? What a shame if this is true.

hero (hero):

What is a UI?

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

User Interface

OpenStudy (saifoo.khan):

We, interns have a way to use: http://help.openstudy.com So while signing up, it asks us to name the person who invited the user.

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

thanks saifoo - let me log out and try that.

OpenStudy (saifoo.khan):

Sure. :D

hero (hero):

It doesn't work.

OpenStudy (saifoo.khan):

it does, log out first and then try it.

OpenStudy (saifoo.khan):

Try signing up.

hero (hero):

I see

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

I just logged out and then went to http://help.openstudy.com and cannot see the link you mentioned. where abouts does it appear?

OpenStudy (saifoo.khan):

You have to try "signing up"

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

oh - sorry - ok, let me try again...

OpenStudy (saifoo.khan):

Np

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

Hmmm - a very log winded way of getting to the sign up window. And even when I got there, there is a dropdown of people to select from - and I am not listed on there???

OpenStudy (saifoo.khan):

Yes, but it's only for global interns.

OpenStudy (saifoo.khan):

A plane just crashed in Pakistan. :(

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

Yes I just heard - very sad news

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

This invite mechanism seems counter-productive - it /seems/ as if OS are now discouraging people (apart from global interns) from inviting others to the site.

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

or at least making it very difficult

OpenStudy (saifoo.khan):

You are correct..

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

Hopefully one of the admins will see this and give a detailed response on their strategy.

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

Thanks again for your help saifoo

OpenStudy (saifoo.khan):

Yes sir - No problem.

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

:)

OpenStudy (saifoo.khan):

\[\Huge (:\]

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

I can't compete with that :)

OpenStudy (saifoo.khan):

Haha.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hey guys, so, that was definitely NOT the intention when they designed the site. You should still be able to invite and we don't want to make it difficult for anyone. We're actually trying to improve sharing from the site using those links and encourage it. Those share buttons by the SmartScore will give you the same inviter link. We removed the email option because it wasn't being utilized. Thanks for the feedback, and I'm grabbing the others so they can see this. The convoluted sign-up process is actually pretty important to know. I've been getting feedback on it from the Interns and it's a known issue.

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

Thanks for the response Laura*. 1. The current signup process is FAR from intuitive 2. It would be nice for any member of OS to be able to invite others in an easy fashion - one that does not necessarily require Facebook or Twitter accounts

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

On an unrelated issue - I just spotted that the "Undo" text against the person you have given a medal to seems to be clipped - see attached image. I am using Google Chrome "18.0.1025.162 m" on 64bit Windows 7 here.

OpenStudy (shadowfiend):

Which part of the signup process is unintuitive? Did you have any specific problems with it?

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

Ok, this was my experience: 1. I navigated to the OS home page 2. I searched everywhere on that page for a signup link but found none 3. I tried clicking on "Start to Studying" as a /guess/ and was taken to a page where I was asked to "Select a Subject to Begin" 4. Again I could not see any obvious place from which to signup on this page - all I saw was a place to enter your username or email plus password in order to Login - which I assume is only valid once you have signed up. 5. I picked a random subject and was finally taken to a page that actually had a signup link. That to me is not very intuitive.

OpenStudy (sasogeek):

@asnaseer I remember raising this issue a while back but then the feedback was that they wanted people to see what goes on inside the site, if they're interested and like what's going on and what they see, they then sign up. if you don't like it, don't bother signing up :)

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

i think there's a sign up button by the chatbox if you're a guest

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

My original question still has not been addressed fully - is it only global interns that can "invite" other people onto this site now?

OpenStudy (farmdawgnation):

No, anyone can invite someone to the site by way of sharing their SmartScore or sharing a particular question. We just did away with the group share buttons in favor of adding the ability to share your SmartScore easily.

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

@farmdawgnation: the situation I am describing is where I have been promoting the site to various people that I meet. Now some of them want to join up, so it seems strange that in order to join up I share a question with them? In addition, how do I share my SmartScore? Remember I do not have facebook or twitter accounts.
