Under the Act of Supremacy, King Henry VIII became the head of the Church of England. Henry wanted a male heir; however, his wife was unable to produce one. To "try again" if you will, he sought an annulment of the marriage from the Pope of the Catholic Church. The Pope did not allow it; therefore, the king decided to create his own church independent of the mainstream Catholic church. Thus the Church of England was born.
