Luis is tiling the rectangular floor of a room measuring 8 feet 6 inches by 12 feet. how many 6inch by 6inch tiles does luis need for the floor without overlapping?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

8 ft, 6 in means 102 in. So the area of the room is (102)(144) = 14688 in^2. Now to get how many 36 in^2 tiles to fit into a 14688 in^2 area would be simple math.

where did you get 144

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well, all I wanted was to make all the units similar. So using 1ft=12in, I converted 8ft, 6in AND 12ft to just inches. So that the floor area would be in in^2. This would make computation easier as the unit used in the tiles is in^2 too.

So, you put \[12^{2}\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes. Since 12ft=12(12)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

inches.
