Use the elimination method to solve the given system of equations. Write your answer as an ordered pair (x,y). 5x +2y =11 2x +y=4

OpenStudy (sburchette):

You can multiply the second equation by -2 to obtain\[-4x-2y=-8\]If you add the terms in each equation, the y values will cancel out and you'll be left with\[x=3\] You can substitute 3 in either equation for x to obtain the value for y. Substituting into the second equation you get\[2(3)+y=4\]\[y=-2\] So the solutions are x=3, y=-2

OpenStudy (sburchette):

(3,-2)
