What effects did the Great Depression have on the USA? I know the major ones, but could someone tell me the small things or give me a link to a website.
The Great Depression changed politics in the United States and Issued the beginning of our welfare state. Many of the policies from that time are still in existence. But the concept that the government could do good and offer a buffer to the brute of capitalism comes from an economist names Keynes. Keynesian economic theory is still a very influential remnant from that period in history even though austerity measures worldwide since the late seventies have pressed on the services that the welfare state can provide. Plus as industry leaves, we cannot prop up the welfare state anymore, so it has become problematic. Public spending became the norm after that. We instituted the income tax and the gold standard was instituted even though nixon later revoked it. The great depression and the subsequent new deal policies changed politics, at least up until the late seventies , when capitalists began to feel the effects of the new deal policies in their wallet, began to push back with neoliberal think tanks and austerity measures. The old school republican party shifted, and thus aligned with the neoconservatives to form our modern day republican party. The democrats have since then and thereafter embraced government spending to give the economy a lift. Some say the new deal saved capitalism.
