Differential equation question here. http://mathworld.wolfram.com/BrachistochroneProblem.html I am having trouble understanding why am I allowed to use the Beltrami identity like that. Why is df/dx = 0, if f depends implicitly on x? Or doesn't it and I am misunderstanding the solution?
