can hombres refer to women if someone says cuatro hombres and one of them's a man? or is it only all men?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Am I making sense? Like, if there are four people working out, three women and a man, could you say "hay cuatro hombres"

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No, because there is only ONE man and three women, you should use mujeres...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No, "hombres" is very very very rarely used for both man and women. "Hombre" might be used for men and women when it really means "mankind". "Cuatro hombres" is 4 men, no women in there. If there are 3 women and one man, we'd go with "cuatro personas" - four people; "cuatro mujeres" wouldn't be right either.
