What would happen to the dissolved oxygen in the Mississippi River if large amounts of waste were dumped into it?

Something really bad

You're talking about adding organic waste to a system and measuring dissolved oxygen. Luckily, this experiment has been run! DO goes down. I think primarily due to the blocking of plant respiration by the organic waste, but I am SURE it is more complex than that. (It is: the organic waste is broken down... which ALSO uses up O2): http://www.mbgnet.net/fresh/pollute.htm

Forgot to add this more complex and detailed source: http://www.dnr.mo.gov/env/esp/waterquality-parameters.htm
