Sickle cell anemia is the most common form of sickle cell disease (SCD). SCD is a serious disorder in which the body makes sickle-shaped red blood cells. “Sickle-shaped” means that the red blood cells are shaped like a crescent.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Symptoms usually do not appear until after the age of 4 months. Symptoms include attacks of severe abdominal pain, being tired, slowed growth, and bone pain. It is managed with blood transfusions and drinking plenty of fluids. Pain medicines are often part of the equation.
