What was the New Imperialism?

It was a period of colonialism that the US, several European nations, and Japan took part in during the last half of the 19th century and into the early years of the 20th. For example, China was forced open by the European powers which set up colonies to exploit its resources. Britain spread into Africa, enforced their hold over India (which they had already held since the 17th century), and made further inroads into Southeast Asia.
