Hi, I don't understand this question (attached). Would you please explain why the answer is: 120

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hero (hero):

It actually should have been 120<y<125

hero (hero):

So even I would have gotten it wrong

hero (hero):

Looks like you had no chance with that question.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay. Are you able to explain why how you would get that answer?

hero (hero):

Because x + y = 180 since x and y are supplementary. Therefore if the values of x are between 55 and 60, the values of y must be between 120 and 125

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OH, I see! Okay, thank you very much! :)

hero (hero):

@campbell_st must be typing a book

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

firstly the question hasn't been proof read very well... the V should be B 55<y<60 then x will be in the solution x and y are supplementary... meaning that add to 180 degrees' the question is saying if 55<y< 60 or if y is between 55 and 60 degrees, between what measurements is x if y = 55 then x = 125 55+125 = 180 y = 60 then x = 120 60 + 120 = 180 so the solution is if y is an angle between 55 and 60 then x must be between 120 and 125 e.g. y = 57 x = 123

OpenStudy (anonymous):

:)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Aha! That makes sense! Thanks so much for the thorough answer, campbell_st

hero (hero):

Actually, since y is obtuse, the solution should have been 120<y<125

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks so much!
