The figure below shows a triangular lawn labeled PQR. There are two fences, AB and BC.What is the total length of the fence AB and BC? 120 feet 140 feet 170 feet 180 feet

OpenStudy (pfenn1):

OK. I am a little rusty on this. See if this makes sense..... I think the triangle APB is proportional to triangle RPQ. Therefore I believe that length of the segment AB should be proportional to the length of segment RQ just as the length of segment PB is proportional to the length of segment PQ.

OpenStudy (pfenn1):

We know length of segment RQ = 210 feet length of segment PQ = 70 feet length of segment PB = PQ - BQ = 70 - 40 = 30 feet so AB/RQ = PB/PQ AB/210 = 30/70 rearrange AB = 210 (30/70) = the length of segment AB

OpenStudy (pfenn1):

Does that make sense?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

uh...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so what would it be then?

OpenStudy (pfenn1):

The length of segment AB = 210 x (30/70) = ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Still lost. :/

OpenStudy (pfenn1):

Are you lost as to how do the math to determine the length of segment AB or you are lost because you don't understand how I figured it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lost as to how to do the math

OpenStudy (pfenn1):

you don't know how to do 210 x (30/70)?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh its 90 then you multiply it right so it would be 180?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i think idk :/

OpenStudy (pfenn1):

Okay, let's go back to the beginning. The question asks us to determine the total length of the segments AB and BC on the figure. We know: RP = 140 ft PQ = 70 ft RQ = 210 ft BQ = 40 ft

OpenStudy (pfenn1):

We also know RA=BC RC=AB

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is the answer 180 though i have to get this done now its almost 11

OpenStudy (pfenn1):

Do you agree that the triangle ABP is proportional to RPQ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yea i guess loll

OpenStudy (pfenn1):

Okay forget that. I didn't get around to doing the length of BC yet because I was trying to make sure you understood but I will just show my calculations so you can finish and go to bed.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay thank you so much

OpenStudy (pfenn1):

ok from above I said the length of AB =(210) * (30/70) = 90 ft

OpenStudy (pfenn1):

ok for length of CD, CD=RA RA/RP = AB/RQ RA/140=90/210 RA=140 * (90/210)=60 so AB + BC = 90 +60 = 150 ft

OpenStudy (pfenn1):

d%*n....I got the wrong answer. hold on, let me check this quickly.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the choices are 120, 140, 170 and 190

OpenStudy (pfenn1):

oh.....I wanted the length of CD so I forgot to subtract 60 from 140 =80 ft so AB + BC = 90 + 80 = 170 I think the answer is 170

OpenStudy (pfenn1):

I was trying to help you see what I was doing but I wasn't explaining myself very well and it is getting late. Sorry that I wasn't more succinct.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so its 170? and its alright

OpenStudy (pfenn1):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok thx

OpenStudy (pfenn1):

you are welcome.
