It is analaogous to a subset.

It is a space in its own right but usually spans only an incomplete part of V.

Example:

V is spanned by (1,0,0) (0,1,0) (0,0,1) xyz 3 d

consider the space S spanned by (1,0,0) (0,1,0) the plane x,y
