Solve the system of equations using the elimination method and give your answer as an ordered pair: -5x - 3y = -16 -x + 9y = 64

The elimination method puts two equations on top of each other and "adds" or "subtracts" one equation from another to eliminate a variable. Say we want to get rid of y. You would manipulate the equations so that the y-values in each would be opposite integers. So here, we can manipulate -3y to -9y so the y's will be cancelled with the 9y in the second equation.

-5x-3y=-16 ---times three---> -15x-9y=-48 second equation --------------> -x+9y= 64 adding both equations ---------> -16x+0y= 16 so, -16x=16 and x=-1

Now you can solve for y by substituting -1 into x, and you'll have your ordered pair
