A plot of land is triangular in shape as shown below. The shaded section inside the triangle shows the shape of a farm on the plot http://www.photoshop.com/users/doctorwho15/assets/919d3caaa9c04d908577e58a1a661a82 Jose said that the shape of the farm is not a rectangle with angles equal to 90°. Jose is correct. How did he arrive at this conclusion? Using complete sentences, justify your answer.
Ok, so what I'm getting is that we need to prove that the triangle isn't a right triangle. This can be done with the Pythagorean Theorem: a^2+b^2=c^2
Just plug the numbers in and see if the equation still stays true.
so like this 67^2 + 56^2=33^2 4489 + 3136 =1089 90 not equal to 1089
Um, kinda. You got the right idea, just the plugging in wasn't perfect. c represents the hypotenuse, so 67 would be substituted into c, not a.
so then like this 56^2 + 33^2= c^2 3136 + 1089 = c^2 4225=c^2 sqrt 65
yeah, and 65 does not equal 67 so the triangle is not a right triangle.
Does that make sense?
yea so for my answer i will show my equation and then say that it is not a right triangle becuase the correct answer should be 65 not 67
Yep, you got it :)
awesome. im gonna post one more question then im done, thanks so much for all your help
Glad to be of help
