What is pure science and applied science?

Well (in my opinion), its all in the name :)

Applied science is exactly that, applied. It is done for a purpose in order to be used. For example you might do research into the quality of water in a lake to see if it would be suitable for drinking.

Pure science on the other hand is sometimes described as science for the "sake of science" or knowledge. A dictionary definition is:
A science depending on deductions from demonstrated truths, such as mathematics or logic, without regard to practical applications.
