How do printers work? What's the whole process behind turning something like a .pdf or .odf/.docx into printer instructions to output something that looks as described by those files? Also what is PostScript

http://www.adobe.com/products/postscript/pdfs/PLRM.pdf I would expect that to explain Postscript thoroughly. http://www.cups.org/ should have code for printing.
