I will give you an example, maybe that would help :)

In a population of cats, we sampled 345 of them.

The cats are the population and the sample is the 345 we sampled.

The population is like the big/broad category you are taking samples from.

So try to think, what group would you be trying to understand?

I will try another example:

Imagine you are doing a study and you want to find out if teenagers like peanuts. Well you can't ask all of the teenagers in the world! So you pick out 300 teenagers. Your population would be the teenagers and your sample would be the 300 teenagers.

In your question your research question would be something like "how many veterans support the war?".
