1. Identify the sample and population: In a survey of 451 Veterans, 82% support the war in Iraq.

OpenStudy (trancenova):

Well a sample is a small (or large) part of the population. So which one is part of the other? :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

idk

OpenStudy (trancenova):

Ah, well this question is a bit tricky, because they try to distract you! I will give you an example, maybe that would help :) In a population of cats, we sampled 345 of them. The cats are the population and the sample is the 345 we sampled.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So 82 % is the population ?

OpenStudy (trancenova):

Nope, that's just the sneaky bit they put in to throw you off the real answer (sorry for not replying! I'm not sure why the notification didn't pop up :/). The population is like the big/broad category you are taking samples from.

OpenStudy (trancenova):

Another definition is (from wiki): A population can be defined as including all people or items with the characteristic one wishes to understand. So try to think, what group would you be trying to understand?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sooo population is 451 ?

OpenStudy (trancenova):

So close! That is the sample :) The 451 is what you have "picked out", what you have picked it from is your population.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Im confused which is which

OpenStudy (trancenova):

Sorry to confuse you! I will try another example: Imagine you are doing a study and you want to find out if teenagers like peanuts. Well you can't ask all of the teenagers in the world! So you pick out 300 teenagers. Your population would be the teenagers and your sample would be the 300 teenagers. In your question your research question would be something like "how many veterans support the war?".

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Just forget it But thanks.

OpenStudy (trancenova):

Awww don't give up!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

451 is the Sample ?

OpenStudy (trancenova):

Yep! :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

And 82% is ?

OpenStudy (trancenova):

An annoying number the people threw in to confuse you :/

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so whats the population

OpenStudy (trancenova):

The veterans :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks :)

OpenStudy (trancenova):

No worries, I just hope you understand it now ^^

OpenStudy (anonymous):

But i have another question :/
