After you have created the tessellation, explain, using complete sentences, why or why not each of the following symmetries exist in your tessellation: translational reflectional rotational glide reflectional

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Here is the shape i made and drew. Can someone help me with the question part?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

First off, do you know what a translational symmetry is?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It's if you can move the pattern left, right, up, down, or diagonally without changing its appearance. right?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

exactly, so can you take the entire drawing and move it up, down, left, or right and keep it the same?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeas

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

so this figure has translational symmetry

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it doesnt have reflection right?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

can you reflect this figure over any line that passes through the figure and keep it the same?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

good, so it doesn't have reflectional symmetry

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

what about rotational?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i dont think so

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im stuck on that one

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wait yea?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

good, this is because you can't rotate the figure any number of degrees to make it match up (the number of degrees is less than 360)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

so it doesn't have rotational symmetry, which means your first answer is correct.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok what about the last one?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

do you know what a glide reflection is?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no i need help with that one

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

alright, a glide reflection is simply a combination of a translation and a reflection. So when you perform a glide reflection, you translate then you reflect (or you can reflect, then translate)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

so can you perform a glide reflection and keep the image the same?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no i dont think

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

Yes you are correct. Since a reflection does not keep it the same, a glide reflection does not keep it the same.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok thank you

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you're welcome
