In right triangle trig, the cosine of an angle is the ratio of the adjacent leg to the hypotenuse. So, cos (theta) = 12/y and y = 12 / cos(theta). The tangent of an angle is the ratio of the opposite leg to the adjacent leg. So, tan (theta) = x / 12 giving x = 12 tan (theta)
