Sophia has 8 books in her locker. All the books are either school or personal books. She has three times as many school books than personal books. How many school books does Sophia have in her locker.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Let's call school books \(s\), and personal books \(p\). We know that she has 8 books total, or in other words, \(s+p=8\). We also know that she has three times as many school books as personal books, which means that \(s=3p\). If we use substitution, plugging the second formula into the first, we get \(3p+p=8\), or \(4p=8\), which means \(p=2\). Since \(s=3p\), that means that \(s=6\). So the answer is, Sophia has six school books in her locker.
