To get from your house to your grandparent’s house you must avoid walking through a pond. To avoid the pond, you walk 5 meters south and 12 meters east. How many meters would be saved if it were possible to walk through the pond?

OpenStudy (blockcolder):

You walked a total of 17 meters avoiding the pond. If you could walk through the pond, by the Pythagorean theorem, you would walk \(\sqrt{5^2+12^2}=13\) meters. Thus, you saved 4 meters.
