How are genes responsible for cellular differences?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Genes encode the information to make all the proteins in the cell. So genetic differences means the cellular proteins will be different. Also, cells with exactly the same genes can use (express) different genes to become different types of cells.

thank you. I was so confused. I was thinking along the lines of the stem cells ability to change into any type of cell needed. I knew that cell differentiation meant less specialized cells could become more specialized but I was having a hard time putting it all together. Thanks again
