What occurred during the Nullification Crisis?? Please help! It's due tomorrow and I'm so confused!!
The Nullification Crisis occurred in the 1830s when South Carolina believed that the national tariffs on trade (passed in the late 1820s) unfairly targeted the South as a whole. The idea was that the state could "nullify", or suspend, federal law within its borders. This plays into the "nullification doctrine", a constitutional theory that put forth the idea that states had the power to "nullify" federal law. South Carolina felt that the federal tariff law passed in 1828 was unfair and decided to nullify it within the state causing a crisis. It was resolved with a compromise resulting in a new federal tariff law that promised a decrease in tariffs over the next few years. However, it also served as an omen of things to come in later years when the South seceded from the Union sparking the Civil War.
