How do I brainstorm for an essay test that I do not have the prompts to?

So you have to write but aren't given what you're writing about? What is your assignment. There has to be a prompt of some sort, other than "Write an essay" on what? a book, a class, a lecture, a presentation, a movie, etc. What's it on?

So the professor gave us some hints... The first essay is on White Teeth by Zadie Smith, it's going to be based on characters, themes and patterns. The second essay is a comparative essay... let me show you what I did last night, the website is restarting now. :o

Oh, it's for a test. Gotcha. I missed that word. If you don't have the prompts I would say just try to jot notes on things you think are important. Like for the hint you were given for the first, jot down the characters, and their features / personalities, maybe some important things they did. Jot down themes of the story, how / why they're important. Things like that. Take the hints you were given and make notes as best you can about them. I'd say do it once with the book and read that over, and then try to jot them down again later without the book or the first notes. See how much you can remember. Then when you get to the test and see the actually question, before writing anything jot down everything you can remember from your studying that would relate to it, then write your test.
