Adolf Hitler, Germany - Invasion of Poland in 1939 sparked WW2 in the European Theater and is technically the start. Hitler ordered the invasion on the pretext of Poland's "aggression" against Germany (which was fabricated). England and France declared war on Germany in response. The Soviet Union also invaded Poland from the East in accordance to their secret pact with Germany, splitting the country in half. Empire of Japan - Surprise Attack on Pearl Harbor (planning by Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto, led by Admiral Chuichi Nagumo), 1941 finally drew the United States into the war in the Pacific. Hitler declared war on the United States a few days later.
