ok i am extremely confused i thought if you multiply fractions u multiply the denominator as well but in this problem of "completing the square" the denominator stays the same.... x^2-17x+72=0

OpenStudy (anonymous):

solve for x factorize it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

why is it 289/4 shouldnt it be 289/16

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

what do you mean? can you show the part where the multiplication of fractions is not followed?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x^2-17x____=-72 1/2(-17)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wait so when multiplying that it would be -17/2?

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

you'd be multiplying -17/2 by -17/2

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

then add that to both sides :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ahhhh i see no wonder its 289/4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you beautiful

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

you're welcome ^_^
