If everything is red-shifted, then all these objects in space are moving away from each other.

@jc7 is right - and if everything is moving away from each other, that implies at one point in time, everything was a little bit closer to each other. And another point in time, everything was even more compact. And on and on, until you draw the conclusion that all matter must have originated from one point.
