A compression test is usually performed to test how well pistons in the cylinders in the engine compress air. This compression generates pressure. When the compression is strong, the pressure is high. If the cylinders have high compression (gives high pressure), they're functioning properly; if they have low compression (gives low pressure), they're not functioning properly. There's a lot more to the compression test which includes power strokes, combustion chambers etc. If you want to read more about it, visit: http://www.automedia.com/Engine_Compression_Test/ccr20050801cc/1 or just search 'engine compression test' on Google.
