OpenStudy (albert0898):

A postal clerk sold 50 postage stamps for $16.05. Some were 39-cent stamps and the rest were 24-cent stamps. How many 39-cent stamps were sold? Is the answer 19? [1] 19 [2] 23 [3] 27 [4] 31

OpenStudy (mertsj):

x= number of 39 cent stamps 50-x = number of 24 cent stamps .39x+.24(50-x)=16.05 Can you solve that equation?

OpenStudy (albert0898):

OH, I see my mistake. I didn't make it a decimal, I put it as a whole number

OpenStudy (mertsj):

You could do that if you would also use cents on the right side. That is instead of 16.05 put 1605. Then you wouldn't need any decimals at all.

OpenStudy (albert0898):

Ah I see. Well thank you xD. Since you're here, I'd like to ask... Instead of x equaling 39 cent stamps, can it equal 24 cent stamps instead?

OpenStudy (mertsj):

Of course. It makes no difference at all. Just remember to answer the question the problem asks.

OpenStudy (albert0898):

Well I would like to thank you, so very much! xD
