help me PLEASE hi, im an algebra on student and currently I'm working with classifying polynomials and i don't understand it at all. Can someone please help me! First off, I don't understand algebra, i have a very hard time with remembering things. So i don't know how to classify ANYTHING..someone please help

OpenStudy (mertsj):

Do you know how to tell the number of terms in an expression?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

noo...);

OpenStudy (mertsj):

Terms are separated by plus or minus signs.

OpenStudy (mertsj):

3+2x That is 2 terms

OpenStudy (anonymous):

soo.. 4x-3x would be 2 terms? mehh I'm so confused

OpenStudy (mertsj):

6-8x+7y+15z That is 4 terms

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so regardless of the variables?

OpenStudy (mertsj):

Yes 4x-3x is two terms until you add the like terms and get 1x. Then it is one term

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(x-5)(x^2+4x)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what would that be? its multiplying..

OpenStudy (mertsj):

That is one term because it is a product.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm still confused);

OpenStudy (mertsj):

It is a product that is composed of two factors. Factors are things that you multiply.

OpenStudy (mertsj):

If you want to talk about the factors individually, we can do that. The first factor is x-5. That factor has two terms.

OpenStudy (mertsj):

The second factor is x^2 + 4x. It also has two terms. So the problem says to multiply two factorss each of which has two terms.

OpenStudy (mertsj):

What is a two wheeled cycle called?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i don't get it.. my teacher says she is giving us a test on it tomorrow and we have to like classify things and I'm very confused.. i dont know how to look at a equation and know if she wants to know if its a monomial, binomial, trinomial or polynomial or i wouldn't know it she wanted to know if it is a constant, linear, quadratic, cubic, or quartic, i wouldn't even be able to look at an equation and figure that out

OpenStudy (mertsj):

Why don't you just answer my question?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

bicycle?

OpenStudy (mertsj):

And likewise a two term expression is called a binomial.

OpenStudy (mertsj):

If the expression only has one term it is called a monomial. What do you think it might be called if it has 3 terms?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay but can you give me a few examples.. I'm a visual learner and its very hard for me to remember and process this. and trinomial.

OpenStudy (mertsj):

2x^2+5x-8

OpenStudy (mertsj):

(x-2)(3+y)

OpenStudy (mertsj):

5

OpenStudy (mertsj):

16x+17y^3+8z^2-96a+75q

OpenStudy (anonymous):

all i see is numberrss and letters and confusion..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

5 is monomial? and a constant?

OpenStudy (mertsj):

You wanted examples. I gave you examples. How about you give some answers?

OpenStudy (mertsj):

Start with the first one and do them in order.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

because i don't know the answers cause i don't understand..):
