3x-4(x+3)=20

OpenStudy (anonymous):

PEMDAS Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally... that's how I learned it; the order of operations. Parenthesis, then exponents, multiplication, division, addition, subtraction from left to right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

we'll have to distribute the 4 here first in this case, this is a form of multiplication i think. So by distributive multiplication property we get: 3x-4x+12=20 then just solve for x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x=-8 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yup

OpenStudy (anonymous):

3x+(-4x-12) = 20 3x-4x-12 = 20 3x-4x = 12+20 You may finish the maths yourself?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh! :o.. yes, ma bad, volcomusa is right sorry about that. LOOK at her work I forgot to distribute the - sign to 3. instead of 12 it should be -12 as volcumusa pointed out

OpenStudy (anonymous):

why does this equal -8? you made me think I was tripping at first lol, i checked my work like fourteen times and im in calc lol its late xD http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=3x-4%28x%2B3%29%3D20

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol yea :p ... endiia, I hope you are still on, and can catch the mistake.

OpenStudy (anonymous):
