Explain how both the principles of superposition and faunal succession are important to determining the history of the rock layers.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

superposition means that younger layers are deposited on top of older layers, so in sedimentary rocks one can trace the history (older to younger) by going from lower to upper layers. With faunal succession, fossils should show gradual or sequential changes. Layers in different sedimentary deposits with the same fossil fauna can be presumed to be of approximately the same age.
