I'd probably go with "casting the lead in a play". Perceptions of a play can change dramatically on who is picked to be the lead since so much depends on the role. It's an easy target for controversy when the choice makes little sense. 

The same can be said for film. Leonardo DiCaprio was probably the best "Jack" for Titanic. Picking someone like Sylvester Stallone instead, as cool as he is, might be just a tad controversial.
