Which of the following best describes sperm production in the male human reproductive system? a. Four haploid cells, with 23 chromosomes each, undergo meiosis to form one diploid sperm cell, with 46 chromosomes. b. Four haploid cells, with 23 chromosomes each, undergo mitosis to form one haploid sperm cell, with 23 chromosomes. c. One diploid cell, with 46 chromosomes, undergoes meiosis to form four haploid sperm cells, with 23 chromosomes each. d. One diploid cell, with 46 chromosomes, undergoes mitosis to form four diploid sperm cells, with 46 chromosomes each. I think its c or d..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It's actually c because gametes ( sex cells such as sperm and eggs) include only half of the 46 chromosomes from the original diploid cell; that's why they're haploid.

oh thank u!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You're welcome! :]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wait, so its either a or b becaue they are haploid?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No, it's c. To create gametes, you always start with a diploid cell (46 chromosomes). That diploid cell undergoes meiosis and at the end of meiosis produces 4 haploid cells (each with 23 chromosomes).

oh now i understand, thank u sooo much!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No worries!
