Find the range for the measurement of the third side of a triangle, x, given the measures of the two sides: 5m and 11m. 6m > x > 16m 5m > x > 11m 6m x 16m 7m > x > 17m

The sum of 2 sides of a triangle must be greater than the third side, thats what you'll have to use. Also, 'x' > 0, since it's a length. Now, x + 5 > 11, and x + 11 > 5 (this will be true for any positive x), and 11 + 5 >x. This should give you the answer.

(1) x > 0 (2) x + 5 > 11. Take 5 to the other side. (3) x + 11 > 5. This is true for all positive x. (4) 11 + 5 (=16) > x. The common solutions of x give you the answer.
