As the spread of communism picked up in the late 1940s, how did the U.S.'s national security advisors react?
this is on the vietnam war
They started on a path of "containment" to check the spread of Communism, particularly by the Soviets who backed Communist-friendly regimes. US involvement with Vietnam started with advisers sent in to help shore up the regime's poorly led (and heavily corrupted) military forces who were encountering embarrassing defeats at the hands of Communist guerrillas backed by the North. The government of South Vietnam under Diem, at the time, was also heavily corrupt which complicated defense of the country until a coup assassinated him. Even so, South Vietnam continued to be put at risk by the North. This later escalated into an investment of soldiers from the US to bolster South Vietnam's army and keep the democratic-friendly government intact, though this all played into the US policy of containment in trying to check the spread of Communism.
my options are: A. Advised President Truman to provide military aid to North Vietnam B. Created the domino theory to predict the spread of communism C. Encouraged Emperor Bao Dai to hold Vietnamese elections D. Wrote a memo asking President Truman to build up U.S. military force so would it be A.?
or d ?
Remember, North Vietnam was the Communist part. South Vietnam was the democratic side. And much of the policy concerning Vietnam occurred after Truman's time in office, so I probably wouldn't go with D. The US wanted to stop Communism as it saw it spreading from one country to the next, almost as if they were all... do you want to guess the answer? :)
c?
The poor emperor was actually outmaneuvered by his prime minister, Diem, who went on to become the first President of South Vietnam...and killed all elections. B. is the best answer because of the "domino theory" of one country falling after another like dominos to Communism. By the time Vietnam happened, China had gone Red. North Korea and South Korea had just concluded a fight with North Korea remaining staunchly Communist. The Berlin Wall was also going up. Kennedy wanted to stop the dominos from falling and worried that South Vietnam would be next.
oh okay welll thanks
