Sociology 100: Sociological Imagination - What do you think Mills meant when he said some “individuals, in the welter of their daily experience, often become falsely conscious of their social positions?”
Possibly, that due to structural inequalities and the illusion that one has a decent or general social position in society, individuals think or perceive that their class or social standing is higher than it actually may be. Also, when looking at society today the lines of distinction between a class or social position are blurring or have been blurred. Thus, if a person from a "lower" class background speaks properly and listens to classical music because he/she is learning to play the violin from a scholarship, that person will gain a false consciousness of a higher class status and social position.
