I would first start by exploring the massive schism, both physical and moral due the partition of Germany after the Potsdam Conference.

Beginning with this schism you can explain a loss of identity but also with it a renewed shame and a will to bury the past deep into the dustbin of history.

In an introduction, or as a methodology, I would explore the prior German culture to be able to compare and show the change and contrast. A few things you might wish to look into are the arguments that Hitler was the continuation of Imperial Germany and that this reflects a general German culture of aggression and dominance seeking.

Do not forget the importance of the pressure of the U.S. in this matter and the sale of the American Dream abroad.

Also it might be worth linking the post War situation with the soon to be European integration and how cultural centers shifted from the interwar era to the post war era.
