find the difference. (-5x+4)-(-3x+7) what do i do with the extra minus signs? do i make them negatives or positives?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-8x-3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

where did that -3 come from?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohhh okay... thanks

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i dont think thats right billybob

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the minus sign before the (3x+7) is distributed to make the final answer -2x-3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wait its -2x-3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im confused

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok basically the minus sign before a quantity in parentheses counts as a negative 1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah a minus and a minus equals a plus

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so you can imagine the expression being (-5x+4)+(-1)*(-3x+7). Distribute the -1, and it becomes -5x+4+3x-7. Now simplify that.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and what billybob said too

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay i understand thanx again
