12 + x = y 12(.30) + 1x = y(.40)
The 15 is a trick
12 + x = y 3.6 + x = .4y .4(12 + x) = 3.6 + x 4.8 + .4x = 3.6 + x 4.8 - 3.6 = x - .4x 1.2 = .6x 1.2/.6 = x 2 = x
Therefore, 2 quarts must be added to get the 40%
