What events slowed the pace of the equal rights movement? What were the key achievements and limits of the policies related to civil rights? What role did civil rights leaders play? Why were voting and equal access to education crucial to civil rights? How was the philosophy of non-violence used in the civil rights movement?
equality did not come for the african americans until many years after the civil war because they were limited economically, socially and politically by the whites economically- discrimination made them unable to receive jobs in the workplace; had no choice but to work as sharecroppers. underpaid working in basically the same conditions in the south as they were during slavery. socially- racism was still significant; whites (particularly southern) did all that they could to see blacks were still underprivileged. Jim Crowe Laws were racism in the biggest form permitting "seperate but equal" conditions, which were extremely unequal. politically- acts like the "grandfather" clause and literacy tests were put in place at the polls (primarily in the south) to make sure that there was no way that blacks would be able to vote freely or at all.
