why do people think of the violin as a sad instrument?

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

in my opinion it is because the violin is capable of long sounds and we relate long sonds to sadness because of the slow beat.

OpenStudy (matt6288):

I agree! @lgbasalloto it looks like a sad instrument to!

Actually, being the smallest member of the string family, the sound of the violin are actually the happiest of the lot! You should check out compositions like Vivaldi's Four Seasons Spring. The violin's certainly very happy in that one! Or you could compare the sound of the violin to that of the other members of the string familiy, which sound even sadder than the violin. Of course, as with many instruments, the way you play it, as well as the emotions that the musician is experiencing while he/she plays the violin, does affect the sound's happiness or sadness. There are many ways in which you can switch your technique so as to produce a different mood.

I love the sound of the violin! It's just my 7th grade teacher used to always pretend to be plying the violin whenever he was feeling sorry for someone and I was just thinking about it so I decided to ask :) thanks anyway @CHAD159753 :)
