Explain? Is the sequence geometric? 48, 46, 44, 42, ...

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

Take any term but the first term and divide it by the previous term, what do you get?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

also tell me which terms you're using

OpenStudy (anonymous):

44/42 is 1.0476190476

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No its not in geometric. Its in Arithmetic

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

It's more like 42 divide by 44 (44 is the previous term) So 42/44 = 0.9545

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohh Okay

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

Now pick another term, say you pick 46 Divide that by the previous term 48 46/48 = 0.95833

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

You'll see that the two quotients are NOT equal, so there isn't a common ratio Therefore, this sequence is NOT geometric.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh! Okay! Thanks so much!

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

sure thing, you're welcome
