because I notice other site run much slower when this site is open these days

Again, I'm wondering as opposed to when. Though we have had a significant uptick in traffic, so it's possible there's just more stuff going on.

Yeah, again, technically it's possible, yes. There's been more activity, which means more stuff sent down to the browser, which technically means more bandwidth used.
