Igor, who is 4ft 8 in tall, wishes to find the height of an oak tree in front of his castle. he walks along the shadow of the tree until the end of his shadow exactly overlaps the end of the treetop's shadow. At that point, he is 22 ft from the foot of the tree and 11 ft from the end of the shadows. How tall is the oak tree?

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

this implies the tree shadow is 33 ft set up proportion h is tree height --> h/33 = 4.666/11 solve for h

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Alright. I figured that it would be a proportion. However, the way the question was worded made me wonder about the overlap and such. I couldn't draw out a diagram that made sense in my head

OpenStudy (anonymous):

This all has to do with similar triangles.

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

yeah it took me a couple minutes too...haha |dw:1336423797523:dw| the end of their shadows meet at same point
