at the end of the day,a storekeeper had $1155 in the cash register, counting both the sale of goods and the sales tax of .5%. Find the amount that is the tax. Round to the dollar if necessary.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that means he had to pay 0.5% of his income??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm guessing. the answers are A. $46 B.$60 C.$55 D. $58

OpenStudy (radar):

Wish sales tax was .5% for this area. If it is .5% you would convert that to a decimal. Do know how to convert per-cent to a decimal?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

radar yes I do. Thank you.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

then 1155 is 0.995 of sale... so divide 1155 by 0.995 and multiply by 0.005 Answer should be 5.8 ...

OpenStudy (radar):

Then let x = taxable goods and services. .005 x would be the tax. x + .005x = $1155 1.005x = $1155 x==$1149 tax = 1155-1149 =6 dollars, that is why I think the tax is 5% not .5%

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i think the tax should be substracted... if i understand it right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh ok... it should be added http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sales_tax
