4*45/6=30 minutes

The numbers don't cross off. The units do. The miles part crosses off because it's the same on both sides. It's a cross multiplication technique. When multiplying fractions similarities that cross like that can be cancelled out. so something on the denominator on the left (in this case miles) and the numerator on the right (again, miles) can be cancelled because it's the same.
But that still leaves you with the numbers, and the minutes unit.
So you're left with (45 / 6) * 4 = x minutes
